Memory Foam History
Memory foam is a common component used in a variety of consumer goods today. Memory foam mattresses are perhaps the most popular but other items made of memory foam include pillows, mattress toppers and more. Many consumers see memory foam as a new revolution in sleep comfort but in actuality it is anything but new. Memory foam was invented over 40 years ago.
Memory foam was the brain child of NASA. The concept for the material arose out of NASA's need for a material which could help enhance safety. Specifically, NASA wanted a way to make the cushions within their spacecraft safer. Astronauts were subjected to strong gravitational forces upon take-off. Memory foam was designed in the hopes it would lessen this impact. NASA's first attempt at this material was known as T-foam or temper foam, but it proved to not be very durable. T-foam could easily crack over a short period of time. Memory foam was NASA's second attempt and it proved to be a much better option.
Memory foam was formed by adding chemical additives to polyurethane. These additives helped to add to its density and viscosity. This gives memory foam special properties that allow it to react to the heat from the body. These special properties are one of the reasons for its popularity.
Eventually, NASA supported the use of memory foam for consumer goods outside the space program. The material was first used as padding for medical equipment, such as x-ray tables. It was also used for protective padding in sports equipment. As time went on the uses for the material grew and so did its popularity. Eventually in the 1980's NASA relinquished their patent over the substance and memory foam became public domain for anyone to use.
About a decade later, memory foam was used in the construction of mattresses. Mainly these first memory foam mattresses were utilised in hospitals. These mattresses were a method of alleviating the pain of patients. As with most new products, when memory foam mattresses were first created they were quite expensive. However, as time has gone on, these types of mattresses have become much more reasonably priced.
